Kickball

Rules Summary - the Quick Version

  • Please follow all posted park and city rules.
  • No metal or screw-in cleats or spikes, please.
  • 10 players on the field, everyone bats. Coed format - minimum 4 women in the field.
  • 2 strikes for an out. A strike is any part of the ball over the plate, below the knee. (foul = strike, yes you can foul out)
  • No walks (count resets), everyone kicks. (3 balls = count reset)
  • Each game is 7 innings or 50 minutes, whichever happens first.
  • Only female players are allowed to bunt. (bunt = leg/foot stops and does not follow through...distance is irrelevant)

3 basic ways to get outs:

1) catch a flyball
2) force out at a base (like baseball and softball)
3) hit a runner below the neck with the ball while they are not in contact with a base. (head shot = safe)

The main rule is for everyone to remember that you are playing Kickball - it's all about having fun and meeting new people!

More complex rules (if you like the details)

  • Each win is worth 3 points and each tie is worth 1.  Your total points will be tallied at the end of regular season to determine playoff seeding.  All teams make the playoffs if possible.
  • While playing defense a team must have 4 females on the field. (at least 1 infield and 1 outfied, pitcher and catcher positions do not count.)
  •           If a team is short females, they must also remove one male from defense for each female missing.  I.e. only 3 females, only 5 males can play defense.  (both teams can agree to override this rule before the beginning of each inning)
  • While kicking there may never be more then 2 of either gender in a row.  If your line-up is a problem, have someone of the same gender kick out of order to fill an empty male or female spot.
  • In the case of an injury, a player may kick and have a pinch runner but the runner must be the same gender.
  • The pitcher must remain in contact with the mound until the ball is kicked. (if pitcher leaves early the kicker is safe)
  •  The "Phill Thompson rule" : The ball should take about 3 seconds (no more than 5 sec) to cross the plate and no part of the ball should be above the knee, when near the plate, for the pitch to be called a strike.  If the pitcher delays the game by pitching excessive balls or very slow pitches they will be warned then asked to change positions. Especially you Phill Thompson :)
  • The Catcher must remain behind the designated line (drawn by the umpire in the dirt) until the ball is kicked. (if the catcher leaves early the kicker is safe)
  • All infielders must be in their relative space  i.e. second base position can not be on the short stop side of second base.  (4 infielders....no rover).
  • all infielders must be positioned base path or deeper (but still on the dirt) until the kick (if an infielder encroaches toward the kicker before the kick, the kicker is safe)
  • All outfielders must be on the grass before the kick is made. (4 outfielders...no rover)
  • Teams with 8 or less players can play without a catcher but the umpire will not filed the ball on any plays.
  • In the case of an intentional drop that causes multiple force outs (infield fly rule) the umpire may rule that all runners are safe and warn the opposing team.
  •  The bobble rule!  In kickball, the second a defensive player touches the ball, base runners may tag up.  The runners do not need to wait until the completion of the catch.  This rule keeps defenders from intentionally bobbling the ball as they run in from the outfield and keep the runners from tagging up.
  • Only 9 runs may be scored per team per inning until the final inning, then run scoring is unliminted.
  • Once a team is up by 9 runs they may no longer bunt.  If the leading team does bunt it will be considered a strike.  If it is the second strike the kicker will be called OUT.
  • ALL TIES GO TO THE RUNNER.  It's hard enough to score and we like seeing players cross home plate.
  •  Anything else you can think of that would be a big advantage is probably illegal :)  Come out, play, have fun, win or lose we are all headed to the sponsor bar to laugh about who fell down and who missed that easy catch.  Be careful, it could be you.
